Black Bayou by Sara Clancy

Black Bayou (Dark Legacy Series #1)

4.5 out of 5 Stars

After early being killed by her serial killer parents, Marigold La Roux decides to move in with an aunt she’s never met in New Orleans. Any hopes of finding a new family are dashed when her aunt shows little interest in spending time with her. When she begins to be attacked by an invisible presence in her new home, the only person she can turn to is voodoo practitioner, Louis. They soon discover that this being has been tormenting Maggie’s family for centuries. Will they free Maggie from it, or is she as doomed as the rest of her family?

This book is well written ad has a lot of intensity. Maggie is attacked frequently, and these are rough, physical attacks. The intensity starts early on as it opens with the murder attempt by Maggie’s parents, and it rarely lets up as the story continues. The intensity is amplified by the very detailed descriptions. I was drawn into it wanting to know what was going on and if Maggie would be freed from the entity before it got even worse.

Marigold, called Maggie, is a very sympathetic character, and her reactions to everything that happens are relatable. She doesn’t know what’s going on and what’s to deny what’s happening, but she can’t. Louis is a voodoo practitioner who just wants to help people. His family and the La Roux family have hated each other for centuries, but he is able to look past that, ad he becomes the only person Maggie can rely on for help. I like the friendship that starts to be established between Maggie and Louis and the way it helps show how much Louis cares. One of the few times the tension lets up is when Louis convinces Maggie to go out for the day an

The main issue I had with the story was the lack of info about Maggie’s relationship with her parents. We’re told nothing about how close Maggie was to her parents or any kind of backstory to their family life before the night they tried to kill her. Granted, she’s probably trying not to think about them, but it would have been nice to have some moments where she remembered something about one of them ad then pushed the thought away. There were also some other minor issues that didn’t really affect the story, like not knowing Maggie and Louis’s ages.

Overall, I liked the story, and I’m very curious to see how the plot develops. Since there were some negatives, I’m rating it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Happy Halloween!
