Haunted Listing (A JJ Gilbert Paranormal Mystery prequel)
Author: Linda M Williams
4.5 out of 5 stars
After dropping out of college, much to her parents’ disapproval, JJ Gilbert returns to her hometown to start a photography business. A high school friend who’s now a realtor hires her to photograph the homes she’s selling. She admits she also hopes JJ’s ability to communicate with spirits will help her client, who’s late husband doesn’t want her to move. Will JJ be able to help the husband move on so his wife can move on too?
I liked this short story. The identity of the ghost and his message was pretty straight forward, so the story could focus on introducing he characters. The writing is good. There aren’t many detailed descriptions, except for the house she’s taking pictures of. I like detailed descriptions but I understand not having them to keep the story shorter and focus on the characters.
Despite being such a short story, there is still enough information given to get a sense of the characters. I liked JJ; she’s interesting and was well written. Her twin brother died when they were teenagers, and she has a strained relationship with her parents, particularly her mother. She has a couple friends from high school she still keeps in touch with, including her brother’s best friend who’s family treats her like family.
The only negative was that the ending felt a bit abrupt, which is why I took off half a star for a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars. Besides that, the story and the characters interest me enough to read more of the series.
