Rookie cop and amateur magic user Bob Ironspell-Cabas, just called Ironspell, has only been on the force for three days when a dragon is released from its enclosure at the Denver Zoo. Ironspell is one of the cops called in to manage the situation until the Denver Wizard Task Force arrives. But when they take too long to get there, Ironspell has to fall back on his own self-taught magic to stop the dragon on his own and, with some help from some werewolves, deal with the sorcerer that released it.
This was a fun introduction to the characters and this modern magical world. The world-building was really good as things, like the magical part of the zoo, are mentioned that shows the supernatural is a part of everyday life even for people who are not magical or supernatural. Although, there are intriguing hints that it wasn’t always this way.
I liked the characters. Ironspell is magically talented, and while he has no formal training, he’s a fast thinker and seems to pick up spells quickly. He’s dedicated to his new career and had hoped to become part of the Wizard Task Force. He reads magical magazines to learn new spells, and overall, just wants to do his best. In the story, Ironspell meets a group of werewolves and Smog, the dragon that was released, who were all nice additions to the story.
There were plenty of funny moments in this story, like Ironspell’s first name being Bob and just the various characters reactions to things. However, there were also some more serious moments with some action, like when a cop is injured by the dragon and Ironspell has to bandage him and when they deal with the sorcerer.
It’s not a greatly written story, but I really enjoyed it. It was fun and it got me interested in the rest of the series, so I’m rating it 4.5 out of 5 stars. If you like humorous, modern fantasy, than you’ll like this this short story.
