What Haunts Me (Ghost Killer #1)
Author: Margaret Millmore
3 out of 5 stars
After a bout with the flu and an intense fever, George Sinclair has some strange dreams that he believes are suppressed memories. He also begins to see ghosts and demons that he realizes are targeting people and making them ill or disabled. Following his instincts, he discovers that he can destroy them. However, as he goes on a spree of ghost killing, he draws the attention of Doctor Vokkel, who has an extreme interest in the paranormal and ghost killers. He also meets his neighbor’s niece, Billy, who is also a ghost killer. George soon finds himself drawn into the world of ghosts, demons, and ghost killers. Will he continue to be a part of it, or will he choose to go back to his normal life?
The plot was interesting. The way the ghosts and demons make people ill or disabled was intriguing. Part of the plot does include an organization called the Watchers help direct ghost killers to where they are needed. Having an organization like that is pretty stereotypical, but surely they could have been called something besides the Watchers? It made me think about Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Highlander.
By the time the story reached the climax, there were less than 30 pages left, so I expected it to feel a bit rushed, but it didn’t. In general the story and the ending also had a good flow. There was a lot of exposition in the first chapter, but it was written as if George was talking to the reader, which made it more interesting to read. Overall, the writing wasn’t bad.
The story is told from George’s first-person perspective. George is smart and determined. However, he just jumps right into ghost killing and just relies on his instincts. He just doesn’t seem bothered about getting answers before he does anything.
Billy is Vokkel’s granddaughter and had a terrible childhood with him. She doesn’t give a good first impression. She’s very abrasive and even rude. At one point she says that she’s earned the right to act like that because of her terrible childhood, which is off-putting. My opinion of her did improve as the story continued, but I still didn’t particularly like her.
By the end of the book, I didn’t dislike the characters, but I didn’t particularly like them either. The rest of the story also didn’t draw me in enough either. Therefore, I’m rating it 3 out of 5 stars.
