Wizardoms: Legend of Shadowmar by Jeffrey Kohanek

Wizardoms: Legend of Shadowmar (The Fate and Fall of Wizardoms series)

Author: Jeffrey L. Kohanek

4.5 out of 5 stars

Deep in the Ghealdan Mountains is an ancient fortress guarded by a legendary monster. An accomplished thief, Jerrell is approached about the job of a lifetime. One hundred gold coins to journey to the fortress, slay the beast, and retrieve an enchanted amulet that is hidden inside. Teaming up with Brogan, the best warrior in the city, they travel to the ancient castle of Shadowmar. Will their quest be successful?

This is a fun fantasy adventure short story. It’s well written with a good pace and flow. It also has some good descriptions of both scenery and their fight with the monster. There is also just enough world-building to intrigue the reader.

Jerrell is only twenty years old, but he’s already well known as a very good thief. However, he’s never left the city, which shows when he and Brogan leave. Brogan is in his thirties and is a former soldier and very experienced warrior. He wants the gold so he can retire to a cabin in the middle of nowhere.

Overall, this was a good story to introduce the world and characters, and I enjoyed the plot. However, I will say I didn’t find Jerrell and Brogan compelling enough on their own for me to want to read more. I was more intrigued by the world-building. That is why I’m rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. If you’re looking for a new fantasy series to get into, the this book is a good place to start, but it ca also be read as a complete story without continuing the series.
