Rabbit King
Author: Keith McCabe
5 out of 5 stars
For centuries, the Rabbit King has watched artists, deciding who will succeed and who will fail. Formerly a photographer, Kasia Doran is now a researcher who helps her clients verify the providence and value of their art. But when a friend and regular client asks her to retrieve the art from the apartment of a suicide victim, she has no idea what she’s about to get involved in. Among his artwork, Kasia finds disturbing photographs of dead bodies with the rabbit skulls edited in over their heads. When her client asks her to find out who the photographer is, Kasia finds herself on the trail of an artist using the Rabbit King as a pseudonym. Soon, she is venturing deeper and deeper into the darkest parts of the art world where even murder can be art.
Overall, the plot was very intriguing and well written. The dark history of the Rabbit King and it’s affect on the art community in this story was fascinating. The story was descriptive, and the type of descriptions really fit into the story’s focus on art. They were poetic and really helped give the story a moody and darker atmosphere. Actually, the atmosphere reminded me of The Ninth Gate that starred Johnny Depp. If Rabbit King were to be made into a movie, it would feel very similar. The plot of both is similar too in that both main characters are looking for the truth behind pieces of art. So if you’ve seen that movie and liked it then you’ll enjoy this book too.
The characters were all interesting and well written with many of the being artists who are more in the underground art world. I quite liked Kasia. She’s determined and enigmatic, although we do find out more about her past later in the book. It’s also very clear throughout the book how much she loves art. She’s also a good friend and likes to help people. More than once it’s mentioned that she uses her connections to help struggling artists get into galleries.
I really liked this book, and with no negatives, I’m happy to rate it 5 out of 5 stars. Definitely pick it up if you enjoy mystery thrillers that dive into the art world.
