Haunting Weir by Kari L. Ronning and A.M. Gagnon

Haunting Weir (Haunted Weir Workings #1)

Author: Kari L. Ronning and A.M. Gagnon

4.5 out of 5 stars

Inside everyone’s soul is a Haunting Weir. A shield against the evil of the world, especially the demons that want to possess and consume souls. Art Storygrove is training to be a weiriman, someone who frees those that have been possessed by demons. However, during his final exam, it’s discovered that he has two haunting weirs and they’re containing a pith demon inside of him. Pith demons are incredibly dangerous. Art soon finds himself on a quest to learn the demon’s name and gather the tools he will need to remove it from his weir. If he can’t, the other weiriman will kill him to keep the demon from being released.

I liked the characters, particularly the friends Art ends up making after they team up. Ever is an elf, and Orchid is a dryad who’s weir has accidentally ended up inside of Ever. They’re only hope if the same blade that Art is looking for, which should be able to cut her weir out of him. They’re intersecting goals are why they team up, but they eventually develop a friendship. The final person in their group is Lucid who has the ability to eat bad dreams. He’s actually a dream catcher that gained human form and sentience. He’s curious about the world around him and has an instinctual knowledge of where they need to go.

This story had a good pace and flow, and the plot was well written. There were some intriguing hits about Art’s past. Although some of the were obvious about where the author was going, and I did figure it out a while before the reveal. But it didn’t detract from the story at all. There were also a few humorous moments to break up the tension.

The only negative in this book was the comma usage. Mostly there was an overabundance of commas, sometimes even in places where I couldn’t figure out why one was put there. Despite that there were still a few places where a comma could have gone but there wasn’t one, which just made the others stand out more. There were a few other minor editing mistakes, but the commas were the main issue.

Despite that negative, I still really enjoyed the story and characters, so I’m rating it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
