As president of the croquet club of the Parke Bowls and Croquet Club, Hettie Parke is thrilled that each club will finally have an individual club room. However, Craig Lewis, president of the bowls club, is throwing a wrench in things by not picking which club room he wants. Finally having enough of arguing about it, Hettie demands an open meeting with all of the club members for a general vote. But only a few days later, Craig is found murdered at the clubhouse and Hettie is a suspect because of their argument. Now Hettie, with help from her sister-in-law Gwen and her oddly intelligent cat, Ceefer, has to solve the case before she gets arrested.
The plot of this book was well written and had some good twists. There are multiple potential suspects for the reader to consider with Hettie. All the different pieces came together well at the end, and I put together who the killer was at the same time as Hettie.
The writing was really good. The story has a good pace and a great flow; I breezed through the chapters. There were also some nice descriptions, particularly when Hettie would walk though the park.
The characters are all well written with a variety of personalities. Hettie is very relatable with her divorce, her difficult relationship with her mother who often criticizes her, and the way she sometimes can’t help but lose her temper. She also has a desire for a more exciting life, although the excitemet she gets isn’t the kind she wanted. Ceefer is also an interesting characters given that he’s an abnormally intelligent cat and seems to understand human speech. I’m interested in reading more in this series to learn more about him.
Overall, I really enjoyed this series and will definitely be reading more of the series. I didn’t have any issues with this book, so I’m rating it 5 out of 5 stars.
