In this urban fantasy, Lana is a demon wrathling and the owner of a restaurant called The Forked Tail. One day, she meets Demi a food vlogger and reviewer who’s just starting out. Demi catches Lana’s attention when she keeps coming back. Lana has an invitation to compete on DemonChef, a cooking competition show, but her former partner for it backed out. When Demi ends up discovering this, she insists hat she could do it with her. But can two demons who just met even make it past the audition stage?
While the plot builds up to the competition, most of the story is very character focused. By the end, I had gotten pretty attached to Lana and Demi. They are both very well written, and it’s very easy to sympathize with Lana. She takes her food and restaurant very seriously and is still hurting from the way her ex-girlfriend and business partner left. Demi is very cheerful and gets easily excited. I wasn’t sure how I felt about her at first, but she eventually grew on me. I liked their interactions and how they slowly grow closer over the course of the story. By the end of the story, I really wanted them to succeed.
While the story is character focused, it’s also very much about food. Lana and Demi both obviously adore food. The competition part of the book was very well written, and the tension of the pressure and time crunch they’re under comes through clearly. I’m also curious to learn more about the nature of demons and even angels, which were mentioned in passing. From the way Lana descirbes them, they sound like vampires. They feed on the sins of humans, or virtues for the angels, and most of them are always hungry and focused on their next meal.
I really liked this book and the characters and look forward to reading more of the series. There was nothing I disliked, so I’m rating it 5 out of 5 stars. If you’re a foodie or like cooking competitions, than you’ll like this book.
