Game of Bones by Pearl Goodfellow

Game of Bones: A Hattie Jenkins and the Infiniti Short Story

Author: Pearl Goodfellow

3 out of 5 stars

Hattie Jenkins is a witch living on Glessie Isle with her group of eight immortal cat familiars, called the Infiniti. When someone leaves a note threatening the Mabon festival, Hattie is asked to help look for trouble. But the trouble she finds isn’t connected to the festival at all. Hattie and her familiars find the skeletal body of a man on a boat that’s washed ashore. While Chief Para Inspector David Trew takes over the crime scene, Hattie can’t help wanting to know who this man is and why he died. Will she and the Infiniti be able to figure it out?

The mystery was very intriguing between the body being a skeleton and where it was found. There was also some good world-building as the mystery was solved which did arouse my curiosity about the rest of the series.

I thought the characters were okay. I just didn’t find any of them particularly compelling. Although, I am intrigued by the Infiniti and their past. They also added a lot of humor to scenes.

The pace and flow of the writing was pretty good for a short story. There is a bit of info-dumping in the beginning, but the author made it work by having Hattie break the fourth wall and introduce herself and the Infiniti to the reader. There were some scenes that could have used a little more detail to be less confusing. There was also some editing mistakes, including incorrect punctuation and missing words.

While the plot was interesting, everything else was average, so I’m rating it 3 out of 5 stars.
