Willow Tree Farm by Suzy Turner

Willow Tree Farm (The Winterbourne Witches #1)

Author: Suzy Turner

4 out of 5 stars

Near the tow of Cinnamon Grove is the Willow Tree Farm. What only the family who reside there knows is that the house is alive. The house can keep people from coming in and can change the structure of the house, like turning stairs into a slide. How is the house alive? The family that built her and still live there, the Winterbournes, are witches. Myrtle and Shannon Winterbourne are twins. Shannon has recently had her Illuminare, which is when witches find out their destined path. Shannon’s is to be a great baker, but Myrtle is still waiting on her Illuminare. What will be her future, and how will it affect Cinnamon Grove?

This was a fun short story. I really liked Willow, the house, which exists in the story as its own character. The beginning of chapter one shows this when Myrtle apologizes to Willow for something she said while Willow refuses to let her in. I liked Myrtle and Shannon. As twins, they’re obviously very close. Shannon is more comfortable and confident about her future, while Myrtle is more worried about hers. Everyone in the family seems to get along well.

However, the writing just didn’t resonate with me. There was nothing outright wrong with it, except for some odd phrasing, but otherwise I couldn’t put my finger on what I didn’t like about it. I just wasn’t drawn into the story, and it didn’t make me want to read more. The sneak peek of the next book actually piqued my interest more.

Overall, this is a decent book. There isn’t a lot going on for plot. It’s really more of an introduction to the family. The fact that it didn’t really capture my interest or make me want to read more is why I’m rating it 4 out of 5 stars.
