The Town the World Forgot by Boris Bacic

The Town the World Forgot (The Town That Shouldn’t Exist series #1)

Author: Boris Bacic

4.5 out of 5 stars

In a town trapped in an endless blizzard, residents go through the motions of daily life. The blizzard keeps them from leaving, but that’s not the only thing they’re dealing with. Sometimes the blizzard brings someone or something that is killing them one by one. John and Lisa are on their honeymoon when a detour sends them to the town. At first disbelieving, they soon realize that they truly are trapped. After someone is killed two nights in a row, the town leaders, Douglas and Regina, decide that it’s time to get everyone working together to get out.

This was a very interesting story with a unique plot. It has many twists and turns and multiple layers. The more things the characters discover the more questions there are. The pace is a bit slow to get started, but it eventually ramps up. Overall, the story was well-written. The tension builds up really well as none of the characters feel safe. I mean this from a narrative sense where you might think a character is more safe than the others because of the plot. The only one I felt was sure was going to live was the little girl who’s in the town with her parents. There’s also a final twist at the end in regards to one of the characters that shocked me as it was very well hidden from the reader.

This story is very character-focused with many different character perspectives used. With the different point-of-views used, you get a good feel for what’s happening throughout the town and how people are handling their captivity. John and Lisa show how people get stuck in the town, and we get a sense of how everyone handles it when thy first arrive. Douglas’s perspective is used a lot since he’s the town sheriff, and we see his stress over how to keep everyone safe and when he finally decides that they all need o work together to get out. The other character’s whose viewpoint is used the most are Nathan, an ex-convict whose determination to escape has him exploring the outside of the town. There’s also Evelyn, whose trying to raise her daughter in the town while dealing with an alcoholic husband, and Maya and Tom who make their own surprising discovery about the town. There are also a few other characters who just get one chapter, and their perspective just helps complete the picture.

Like I mentioned, the pace was a bit slow in the beginning, and I noticed some editing mistakes, but the intriguing plot has earned it 4.5 out of 5 stars. I will definitely be reading the rest of this series. I have so many questions that I want to get the answers to, and I want to see which of the characters survive til the end.
