A Dark Winter’s Tale (Twist in the Tale Short Stories #4)
Author: A J Boothman
5 out of 5 stars
After getting lost from her hiking group, college student Sarah stumbles through the woods. Finding a road, she’s able to wave down a car for a ride. Hearing on the radio that a serial killer has escaped prison, and having noticed some odd behavior from the driver, she can’t help but wonder if she’s in the car of a killer.
The writing was really good. The story’s opening set the stage well with descriptions of the chilling wind and howling branches. Of course I know something is going to happen so between these things, there’s a feeling of dread and anticipation.
Not a lot of information is given about Sarah, but we know that she’s a university student who’s often forgetful. She’s a good everywoman character. Anyone could end up in a situation that causes them to get in a stranger’s car.
Despite the short length (page count), the story is very suspenseful and full of tension. But the final line delivers a twist that shocks the reader and changes how the rest of the story is viewed, making the reader question every characters’ actions.
This was an interesting and well written story. It’s short and simple but attention-grabbing, so I’m rating it 5 out of 5 stars.
