The Ghosts of Miller’s Crossing by David Clark

The Ghosts of Miller’s Crossing (Miller’s Crossing series #1)

Author: David Clark

4 out of 5 stars

Over 30 years ago, Edward Meyer’s life was upended after his parents were killed. Now, less than a year after his wife’s death from cancer, he and his children are moving back to his childhood home in Miller’s Crossing. Soon after his parents’ deaths, he began to see ghosts. Learning to ignore them, his ability intensifies after returning to Miller’s Crossing. Soon, he’s approached by the town’s priest, Father Murray, who tells him that nearly everyone in town can see spirits because the town sits on an energy field that attracts them. He also tells Edward that his family was handpicked by the Vatican to move on the spirits that appear there. With the townspeople expecting him to take over those responsibilities, Edward will have to learn fast because not all of the spirits are friendly.

In general, the writing was good, but there were some places that I think could have been better. There were a couple sections with lore dumping that were a bit clunky, particularly in the beginning when Edward is thinking about his life since his parents’ death until he moves back to Miller’s Crossing

The characters were fine, and I liked Edward. He’s doing his best for his kids while still dealing with the loss of his wife. And his reactions to everything he’s told are realistic. Besides Edward, Father Murray was the only truly fleshed out character. He’s done his best to take care of the town since the death of Edward’s father. Although, we eventually learn that he’s keeping things from Edward. Unfortunately, the characterization of everyone else was either shallow or non-existent, including Edward’s kids.

Overall, I liked this book enough that I would read more in the series. Due to the shallow characterization and sometimes clunky writing, I’m rating it 4 out of 5 stars. If you like paranormal stories with characters discovering family secrets, then you’ll like this book.
