Zero by Krysten Harlow

Zero (Prequel to Chronicles of Lethia series)

Author: Krysten Harlow

5 out of 5 stars

As the sun rises on the partially destroyed city of Zhefrith, seven wizards, including the light archwizard Rayner, prepare to battle the dark archwizard, Zero. While Rayner and Zero battle, the other wizards fight Zero’s followers outside of time. Who will win? Who will survive?

This was a great short story. I really enjoyed he author’s descriptive writing style. The opening of the story beautifully described the sunrise and start of a new day, before turning to describing the destroyed city. Reading this immediately drew me into the story. I also really liked the way she described magic. Spells were inked in the air, and Rayner gathered his power “in the vaults of his own soul”.

There are a lot of characters, all of which get at least a small section of the story focused on them. The true focus of the story, though, are Rayner and Zero and their fight, and two of Rayner’s wizards, Amara and Magellan. Amara’s family and her entire village were killed by Zero and she wants revenge. Magellan is her lover, so they’re very devoted to each other and want to protect each other. There are a few other characters that we get vague little hints towards their backstories, but for most of them, we only get their name and the element they control.

Again, I really liked this story and the descriptive writing, so I’ll definitely be checking out the series and other books written by this author. It’s certainly earned 5 out of 5 stars. The majority of the story is fighting, so great if you’re looking for action, but there are some character focused bits.
