The Fairytale Killer (E&M Investigations prequel)
Author: LJ Bourne
4.5 out of 5 stars
Six months ago in Berlin, two women were killed and posed like fairytale princesses by a man that came to be called The Fairytale Killer, who suddenly seemed to stop killing. Then three bodies are found on the same day. Mark Novak is an American military investigator assigned to the case due o signs that the killer might be an American soldier. Mark’s girlfriend, Eva Lah, is a journalist who receives photos of the victims, and realizes she knows one of them. Working with the local police, they race to find the killer before he kills again.
I really liked this mystery thriller. While some of the details of the murder are disturbing, the case is very intriguing and well written. The ending also managed to surprise me, and the writing was nicely descriptive.
I thought all the characters were well written, and I liked both Mark and Eva. Mark is determined to catch the killer, almost obsessed even. He almost lost his job during the first investigation due to some of his extreme decisions. He also cares deeply for Eva. Eva is a good reporter and has a lot of integrity when it comes to her job. She understands why Mark doesn’t want her to include certain things in her articles, so she doesn’t. She also cares deeply for Mark, and the two seem to have a very good relationship from what we see.
I decided to rate this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. There weren’t any real negatives, but there were some instances where the writing just felt a bit flat. While this book is a prequel, it can be read as a standalone story.
