First Touch (Imprints series prequel)
Author: Teyla Branton
5 out of 5 stars
On the day of her father’s funeral, Autumn Rain is shocked to pick up a picture of her late mother and feel how her father felt while looking at it. Autumn has the ability of psychometry. When she touches an object, she can feel what someone was feeling and see what they were seeing while they were touching it. Since discovering her psychic ability, she’s used it to tell people if someone is lying to them and to help find runaways. Then she’s approached by the police and the father of a kidnapped little girl and asked to help.
This was a very well-written and suspenseful novella that even had a couple of little twists. Despite the twists, it was a mostly straight forward case, which is good for the shorter length. The pace was steady, and it didn’t feel like too much was going on.
I liked Autumn. She has some quirky personality traits, like refusing to wear shoes. She’s very compassionate. When she she’s approached about the missing girl, she immediately wants to help. Detective Martin. of course, doesn’t believe in psychics, but he’s determined to find the girl and is willing to explore every possibility. I really enjoyed how their relationship had changed by the end of the story where they’re able to tease each.
This was a great novella, and I really liked the characters, so I’ll definitely be reading the main series. There was nothing I disliked about it, which is why I rated it 5 out of 5 stars. As a small warning, due to how Autumn’s ability works, we do see the kidnapped girl’s perspective on what’s happening and how scared she is, so be prepared for that.
