The Haunting of Quist House (The Ghosts of Rose Radcliffe #1)
Author: Amy Cross
4.5 out of 5 stars
In the middle of the night in Quist House, a woman awakens at the bottom of a set of stairs. Remembering nothing about where she is or even who she is, she begins to explore the house. She eventually finds a young woman, Cynthia, shackled to a bed who tells her that her name is Rebecca, and she was helping to free Cynthia from her possession. Learning her husband, Jonathan, was one of those with her, Rebecca goes to find him. Will she find Jonathan and get her memories back? Will Cynthia be freed of her possession? Or will the evil entity use this obstacle to its advantage? And outside Quist House, Rose Radcliffe is watching and waiting for sunrise to let everyone out of the house.
The plot was really well written. There were surprising twists and a shocking ending. The story opens with Rebecca laying at the bottom of a set of stairs. First, the writing of the opening section was great. It was very descriptive and quickly drew me into the story, then we’re introduced to her as a nameless woman with amnesia. It was an interesting plot point because it left her as clueless as the reader. As she explores the house, the reader is trying to piece things together with her. And since she doesn’t know what to expect, neither do we.
The characters were well written. Although, it was hard to decide if I liked them. Rebecca obviously isn’t herself and Jonathan is extremely stressed, however, I certainly didn’t dislike them. I did like Rose, who’s a very sympathetic character. She wants more responsibility on their cases, and she’s still mourning the death of someone she saw as a sister.
I decided to rate this book 4.5 out of 5 stars because of my neutral feelings towards the characters. The story also ended with some loose ends. The rest of the books currently in the series are in the past and show the characters’ journey to where they are in this book, which I look forward to reading.
