Valeria Cosoi is a medium who owns a spiritual shop in the town of Rose Lake. She also helps spirits to cross over, so she isn’t surprised when one shows up after she receives some donated items. Unfortunately, she can’t remember much about her death or life, so Valeria has to figure out her identity first. Heidi died ten years before in what was, supposedly, an accident. But as they look further into it, they begin to suspect that she was actually murdered. When a former acquaintance of Heidi’s dies in the same way, they are sure there’s a killer in town. Valeria also begins to worry when she has trouble getting in contact with her friend May after she goes on a date.

The mystery was good and intriguing. And overall, the story was well written. There was some action, particularly at the end. There were also some humorous moments, mostly from Valeria’s aunt and uncle, who are ghosts, who often bicker.

One thing I didn’t like about the writing was that twice Valeria assumed things without any explanation for why she thought that. The first was when someone she wanted to talk to about Heidi’s death mentioned meeting someone at a barbershop, and Valeria assumes she’s meeting the owner instead of maybe just an employee or maybe they have an appointment there. The other time is when her new neighbor waves at her when she’s in her car, and she wonders how they knew it was her car. I wondered how far away he was from her or if he car has tinted windows since he could have just been able to see her through the window, or even just recognized it from them being neighbors.

I liked the characters. Valeria is a good friend and worries when she isn’t able to get a hold of May. She’s compassionate and wants to help the spirits she see move on, but she’s also often exasperated by them when they won’t cooperate with her. She, Yasmin, and May are good friends. May is carefree but needs encouragement from Valeria to date again after a bad relationship. Yasmin is a dedicated police officer.

I did enjoy this book and would read more in the series. Due to the negative, I’m rating this book 4 out of 5 stars. If you enjoy stories about experienced mediums solving mysteries, then you’ll like this book.
