The Potential (A Chris Morehouse Espionage Thriller #1)
Author: David A. Davies
4 out of 5 stars
It’s 1995 and former British soldier Chris Morehouse is a driver for the CIA at the US embassy in Germany. His military history, uncanny ability to work out a solution to situations quickly, and remarkable recall made him interesting to the CIA. However, he gains even more attention when he saves the US ambassador to Germany from a kidnapping attempt. When he encounters someone he saw watching the attempted kidnapping, he tries to warn the FBI, but they brush him off. AS events escalate and multiple groups begin to carry out planned attacks, Chris finds himself right in the middle of the chaos.
This book’s plot was very interesting, although it did verge on having too many moving parts. The identities of most of the big players are revealed early on, but there are surprising revelations as unexpected characters are shown to also be part of the arms-dealing operation. Revenge ended up being a bigger factor in the story than I expected, and as the story progressed, it showed just how far some people were willing to go.
There were a lot of shifts in character point-of-views, so you learn about a lot of the different characters early on, including the men Chris is facing. Chris is an intriguing character with his past in the military and the way he observes and remembers things. He does sometimes make mistakes due to his lack of experience and knowledge, which is a good thing because he can sometimes comes across as better than he is. The rest of the characters are well written. It was interesting how big of a role some of the female characters played in the plot, and the way the women are taking control of what’s going on in their lives.
The writing overall was good, and from the first chapter the action is great. However, some scenes included more details than I thought was necessary and made the scenes drag on. There were also some things included, like glimpses into the thoughts of very minor side characters or historical information, that helped paint a fuller picture of the main characters but also didn’t feel necessary.
Overall, I did like the book. It was interesting and, mostly, well-written, so I’m rating it 4 out of 5 stars. If you enjoy action stories focused on espionage and the government, then you’ll like this book.
