Gina Wallace owns a sandwich shop on the edge of Not-So-Normal Town, and her husband is the police chief of neighboring Normal Town. Gina’s also a witch, but over the years she’s gotten a bit rusty. Then someone is murdered in the bowling alley while Gina, her husband, and their friends are there. When it’s found out that she was poisoned from a sandwich that Gina brought, Gina realizes she needs to investigate and clear her name. With her magic and help from her friend Eve, will she be able to figure out who the killer is?

I liked the plot of this book. It was intriguing and had some good twists and turns with the way different characters are connected. For the most part, I also liked the characters. Alex and Fritz were particularly interesting. Alix is a spirit that lives in a cookie jar, and we later find out that he was actually cursed to live in the jar. Fritz is Gina’s familiar who is a talking cat and also, somehow, a government agent. Gina and Eve were fun characters, and I liked their relationships with their husbands.

Unfortunately, the writing could definitely be better. It was sometimes a bit rambling and information is sometimes given randomly and is hard to keep track of. For example, Fritz being her familiar and a government agent is mentioned for the first time randomly at the end of a chapter.

Also, why are the towns called Normal Town and Not-So-Normal Town? I actually thought it was just a joke at first because one town is where the witches live, but that’s actually their names. Obviously, it’s meant to be a joke on the author’s part, but I thought it was a little too ridiculous.

Overall, I liked the mystery, but the writing kept me from fully enjoying it. I’m rating it 3.5 out of 5 stars. It’s certainly not a bad book, but it could use some improvements.
