Parisian Ghosts (Parisian Ghosts series prequel)
Author: Janna Ruth
4.5 out of 5 Stars
Alix is studying history at the University of Sorbonne in Paris. But she’s not just any college student, she can see ghosts. While on a class trip the Pantheon, where the greatest French people are buried, Alix meets the ghost of Victor Hugo who asks for her help. He introduces her to Josephine Baker, who’s war medals have been taken, and she wants Alix to find them. Alix also decided it’s time to tell her best friend Gaby about her ability. Gaby does’t believe her at first, but agrees to help her anyway. Will Alix find the medals and convince Gaby that her ability is real?
I enjoyed this short prequel. It’s a good setup for the series. While the story wasn’t very intense, there were still some exciting moments, like when Alix and Gaby discover a secret passage in Josephine Baker’s former home.
The plot was well thought out in the way that it had multiple elements that gives the reader more details about ghosts. Like the fact that ghosts only stay around for as long as they are remembered, and that animals can also become ghosts. This is illustrated when Alix and Gaby meet the ghost of Josephine Baker’s pet cheetah.
I liked the characters. Alix is a bit socially awkward, but is very enthusiastic about history and wants to help ghosts. Gaby is cheerful and sociable ad a good friend. Even when she doesn’t believe Alix, she still wants to help her.
The entire story is well written with just a few editing mistakes. While I liked this story, it wasn’t a great story, so I’m rating it 4.5 out of 5 stars. This is a good one to read to get a sense for the characters before reading the rest of the series, or just to get more background if you have read the series.
