Edge of Shadows by Cege Smith

The Edge of Shadows (Shadows series #1)

Author: Cege Smith

4 out of 5 Stars

Six months after her divorce, Ellie Coulter is ready to move on. David Mitchell is a doctor who’s new to the area and soon becomes a regular at Ellie’s coffee shop. When one of Ellie’s employees, Linda, invites her and David to a dinner party, the attraction between them grows stronger. But while they grow closer, the evening ends on a sour note for Linda, and she goes on a spontaneous trip out of town and asks Ellie to house sit for her. But something in the house has been waiting for her. Will she and David get their happily ever after?

This book had an intriguing plot with some early hints that immediately left me suspicious of some of the characters. The story also had an intriguing ending with some questions being answered while leaving me with new questions. Overall, the story was well-written and had a good flow.

I thought the characterization of Ellie was good. Her sadness and desire to avoid people after her divorce is understandable and realistically written. The only time I was annoyed with her was when her ex-husband tells her that he can see ghosts and how that affected him throughout their marriage, and she doubt him because she doesn’t believe in ghosts and wonders why she should believe him about having this ability when he never told her before. But she can see auras and never told him about it! The other things is that she can see auras, but this ability really isn’t important except making the reader more suspicious of a couple of characters, but the story wouldn’t have been any different if she couldn’t see auras. Maybe it will be a bigger factor is the rest of the series.

I liked David. He’s very caring towards people, and his immediate connection with Ellie just makes him want to take care of her. The rest of the characters were fine. Unfortunately, a couple of the side characters did kind of annoy me, but it was just how their personalities and some of their dialogue was written. I just didn’t care for them.

Overall, the book was an interesting read with a good, intriguing ending. Due to the issues I had with some of the characterization, I decided to rate it 4 out of 5 stars. If you like paranormal stories with romance, then you’ll like this book.
