Stakes and Spells (Stakes and Spells Mysteries #1)
Author: Lynn Morrison
4.5 out of 5 stars
Morticia Beaumont is a depressed vampire on a road trip to find something new and exciting. She stumbles upon two witches performing a ritual. Out of curiosity, she stays to watch and ends up trying to save the life of one witch when the other attacks her. She fails but ends up inheriting the witch’s power. When the other witch accuses Morticia of the murder, she has to clear her name using her new magic and with help from the dead witch’s familiar before the shifter agent with the Supernatural Investigations Bureau finds her.
This is a fun short story for Halloween. Except for some minor editing mistakes and odd word choices, it was well written. The vampires in this story are the common depiction of vampires. Along with drinking blood and being immortal, they turn to ash in the sun and transform into bats. It’s also said in the story that vampires don’t interact much with the rest of the supernatural community.
I liked Morticia. She’s endearingly excited about the fact that the witch powers she now has allow her to be in the sunlight and even seem to let her eat human food again. She’s also curious about witch customs and thinks about how she knows so little about witches and shifters, but seems interested in learning. In general, the story is a really good introduction to all of the characters.
Due to the editing mistakes and odd word choices, I’m rating this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. If you like mysteries with supernatural beings or are looking for a fun short story for Halloween, then you should definitely read this book.
Happy Halloween!
