Nightmare Abbey (Nightmare Series #1)
Author: David Longhorn
4 out of 5 stars
The cast of the show America’s Most Haunted are invited to Malpas Abbey in England by the Romola Foundation. The foundation studies paranormal phenomena and has come to believe that someone on the team is a real psychic. The foundation owns Malpas Abbey, and in 1792, it’s said the devil was summoned by a previous owner and other horrific acts have occurred since. The foundation believes that it has all been caused by beings they call the Interlopers. Led by Denise Purcell, nicknamed Denny, and their producer, Matt McKay, the team will face their worst nightmares in the abbey and not all of them will survive. But what do these beings even want?
This book was very intriguing. A lot of information is revealed early on, but I still had so many questions about the Interlopers and the world they come from. In general, the writing is really good, and it has a spooky atmosphere. Unfortunately, that atmosphere is missing an immersive quality, so it’s easily broken when it changes scenes or perspectives. Although, that does improve later as things ramp up.
With a few exceptions, the characters were complex and well written. The story jumped perspectives but mostly followed Denny. Denny is very determined and brave and a good friend. Brie, a psychic on the show, and Ted, an investigator with the foundation, both have traumatic pasts where people they cared about died, and they feel they were responsible for it. The other characters are Matt, Frankie, and Marvin, but we don’t learn a lot about them, They’re treated like side characters in the story.
The main negative for me was that, despite knowing the Interlopers can pretend to be people, the characters were not suspicious enough when one of the others would suddenly appear.
I liked this book. Due to the negatives I mentioned, I’m rating it 4 out of 5 stars. If you enjoy suspenseful supernatural horror stories that aren’t about ghosts and, then you’ll like this book.
