Moorehead Manor (Moorehead Manor Series #1)
Author: David McMullen-Sullivan
4.5 out of 5 stars
16-year-old Emily Brewer is walking home with her 15-year-old brother, Adam and his best friend Jimmy. Emily teases Jimmy about her never having seen him hit a home run which causes him to take the bat and ball he has to show her. Unfortunately, the ball ends up going through the window of an abandoned house, Moorehead Manor. They go in but soon discover they can’t get out. Then they realize they aren’t alone. As they explore the house, they uncover the dark secrets of the Moorehead family which may be the key to them escaping.
I liked this novella. It has a spooky atmosphere with good descriptions that drew me in. And there was a really good twist that surprised me. There were some hints towards it, which the characters realize too, but they were passed over quickly enough that I didn’t give them much thought at the time.
I liked the characters and thought they were fairly well written and realistic. The story uses a 3rd person perspective but mostly follows Emily. Although the teens are terrified, they’re able to stay focused and work together.
One thing I did question was that there were no urban legends or ghost stories about this abandoned house where a murder had taken place twelve years earlier. Is that something that is more in books and movies? In real life, would it just be seen as an abandoned house?
Overall, this is a good book that I decided to rate 4.5 out of 5 stars. There were some elements that made it like other haunted house stories and some things that made it a bit different. This is the first of a trilogy, but the ending is definitive enough that you don’t need to read the other books.
